Art Nouveau Barcelona
Art Nouveau is an artistic style that became popular during the early 20th Century, most notably reaching its height at the Paris Exhibition in 1900. This is a style that is free from all illusion, symbolic or representational function, started mainly as a revolt against the Machine Age. It is an attempt to meld the demands of the new technical, functional age with beauty, to create an art form that is appropriate for the new, modern world.
The artists who were part of this movement tended to be split into two categories: those who embraced the modern age and wanted their art to reflect that, and those who backed into the past, creating art that was a mix of new culture and old art forms. As a result every aspect of daily life, including buildings, decorations, jewelry, clothes and textiles was re-created by these artists in the hopes of bringing out individual beauty in what was now often mass-produced. The works that were born from both these groups has come to define Art Nouveau.
