Barcelona Cathedral
Barcelona has a number of cathedrals worthy of interest. The
Sagrada Familia, of course, seems to receive the lion's share of attention, but locals will tell you that Cathedral of La Seu is Barcelona's cathedral, the one that is nearest their hearts. This is one of the great gothic buildings of Spain - startlingly so, especially if you approach it at night. Locals will proudly point out that it is Catalonian Gothic.
Begun in the 13th century on the foundations of an ancient Roman temple, the building was finished in the 15th century, although the facade was not complete until the 19th. For centuries, this was considered to be the darkest cathedral in Europe: however, in recent years artificial illumination has been added, changing the quality of the interior from "gloomy" to airy and spacious. Be sure to take time to examine the spectacular choir stalls and the organ which features a large bust of Saracen. The side chapels are galleries which house a wealth of treasures. The cloister is a wonderful oasis in the middle of the city.
