Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya
Established in 1990, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (National Museum of Catalonian Art) is among the world's finest medieval art museums. The museum is made up of the old Museum of Catalan Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Drawings and Prints, the Numismatic Museum of Catalonia and the General Library of Art History. The entire collection will be housed in the magnificent, recently renovated Palau Nacional on Montjuic.
Catalan Romanesque art, with its solid rounded forms and stunning simplicity, is represented by sculpture and carving, gold, enamel and textiles. The outstanding treasures are the 11th- and 12th-century murals, removed from isolated country churches and reassembled in the museum in order to preserve them. This museum is another of Barcelona's many masterpieces and should definitely not be missed.
