Palau de la Musica Catalana Barcelona
In a city best known for its architecture, it is fitting that the great Palace of Catalan Music (Palau de la Musica Catalana) is as a noteworthy for the edifice as it is for the concerts that take place there. Built in 1908, the Palace is another classic example of modernismo. The exterior is ornate, complete with columns, domes, busts of great composers, mosaics and a stunning mural. The inside is even more spectacular, causing even visiting musicians to gape in awe.
The 1900-seat auditorium is awash in light during the daytime, courtesy of a breathtaking stained-glass dome. Over 300 performances are given each year, making the Palace the principle venue for concerts and recitals in the city. Recent renovations have not only improved the auditorium, but created an area for outdoor concerts as well. Tours are given daily, with English tours departing on the hour. Arrive early, as tours generally fill very quickly.
