Picasso Museum Barcelona
Anyone with an appreciation for modern art should be sure to visit Barcelona's Museo Picasso, or Picasso Museum. Since its opening in 1963, it has become the city's most frequented museum, housing over 3000 paintings and drawings, many donated to the museum by Picasso himself. These works illustrate Picasso's brilliant career, life, and travels, from his work as boy to his development into a modern master.
The museum is housed within three beautiful stone mansions Carrer de Montecada, and provides visitors with hours of wandering through the halls gazing at some of the most famous works in the world of contemporary art. The buildings also hold a beautiful inner courtyard, so be sure to visit this area as well.
The first floor is devoted to Picasso's blue period, and the second houses his impressionist-influenced works which were painted in both Barcelona and Paris between 1900 and 1904. Be sure also to see the pencil sketches and lithographs done by Picasso at the age of 11, as well as the cubist interpretations of Velazquez's Las Meninas.
While the museum mainly holds works by Picasso, other contemporary artists are featured here as well.
